STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The middle class, once the predominant economic measure of a majority of American adults, has been steadily shrinking for decades. It’s a gradual change caused by inflation, an aging population and the rise of remote work, research shows, but still a significant shift.

So what income limits define the middle class today? SmartAsset, a financial tech company, recently studied what it takes to exist in that category. Using Pew Research’s definition of middle income as two-thirds to double the median income in an area, the group determined how much a worker would need to earn for their household to be considered middle class in 345 of the largest U.S. cities, as well as each state.

Here are some of the key findings:

In a large U.S. city, a middle-class income averages between $52,000 and $155,000. The median household income across all 345 cities is $77,345, making middle-class income limits fall between $51,558 and $154,590.
