Geneva Festival on the Rivers starts Friday, inaugural BBQ contest Sunday [Video]

GENEVA, Ala. (WTVY) – The 47th Annual Geneva Festival on the Rivers kicks off Friday, April 26, but the registration for the BBQ contest ends tonight, April 24.

This is the inaugural Smoke on the Water BBQ Cookoff, where the top three finishers will receive a cash prize. The grand prize will go home with $500.

The entry fee for the competition is $100 and all the meat used will be donated to the team.

Teams will be smoking chicken thighs, a pork loin and a rack of ribs.

“You think about Sunday afternoons, a lot of times you think about family barbecue, and we thought, well, that will be a good way to tie that in,” said Sam Thompson, the festival’s entertainment chairman. “We’re super excited about starting something new and hopefully that will be something that just grows.”
