How Mobile garbage pick-up will change for downtown businesses [Video]

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — The City of Mobile is taking action that could reduce the number of garbage cans lining the streets of downtown.

Until now, the city picked up most downtown businesses’ garbage once a day for free.

The Mobile City Council passed a law on Tuesday that defines which businesses downtown get their garbage picked up and when.

‘If we want a clean city…’

“It doesn’t just disappear at the end of the day,” Casi Callaway, Mobile’s Chief Resilience Officer, said about garbage. “We’ve got to make sure we’re taking care of it if we want a clean city.”

The law defines which downtown businesses are qualified for pick-up services and when those services will happen.

Qualified businesses are limited to restaurants and bars; however, the city has not always enforced this restriction until now.
